Job Description: The New School’s Department of Media Studies and Film invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor with expertise in digital pedagogy and online education. The Media Studies Program enrolls more than 500 students from 30 countries, and offers a curriculum in media theory, history, and criticism, film studies, media management, and audio, video, film, and digital media production. The curriculum consists of on-site and online classes and the M.A. degree can be completed entirely online.

Discipline: 

In today's world of intensive media proliferation, added to the complexity of a century's worth of film, audio, television material - how do you marry up the need to share everything on the web, re-use and re-purpose, with recognition of the inherent value and cost associated with it? We'll explore the types of media, the platforms for use and re-use and look at some of the business models used to exploit it. There are many, many challenges to be aware of, but also some amazing creative opportunities.

project: What is Black British Jazz? Routes, Ownership, Performance

The ‘Black British jazz’ project (BBJ) explores the emergence of a distinct tradition within British music. BBJ melds reggae, hiphop, African music and US jazz into a rich, and constantly developing set of sounds. In documenting this musical hybrid, the project touches on important issues for the study of music – the transmission of cultural values, the social context of musical forms, and frameworks of ownership that impact on musical communities. Transformations Journal Call for Papers: “Slow Media”

Given the contemporary fascination with and, indeed, addiction to real-time media dispatch and commentary, what would it mean to speak of “slow media”? Dare we even think such a thing when everything around us screams of increased speed, increased bandwidth, and increased convergence? We are 24-7, we are always-on, we are connected; we are locatable, we are X/Y coordinated, we are plotted; we are status updated, we are tweet-fed, we are real-time media junkies and we don’t have time to slow down.
