project: Connected Histories
Grant Holder:
Connected Histories (Sources for Building British History, 1500-1900) will create a federated search facility for a wide range of distributed electronic resources relating to early modern and nineteenth-century British History.
Through a combination of web crawling and the application of Natural Language Processing methodology the project will create a non-intrusive, distanced tagging of the data within those distributed sources to facilitate more sophisticated and structured searching.

project: The Saint-Aubins' 'Book of Arses': The Livre de Caricatures tant bonnes que mauvaises
Grant Holder: Professor Colin Jones
The project is focussed on a highly unusual book of eighteenth-century caricatures, the 'Livre de caricatures tant bonnes que mauvaises', composed between the 1740s and the 1770s by the Saint-Aubin brothers and associates.
The Project aims to digitise the volume (which contains 387 pages) and to place it on the web in the form of a critical edition. [read more]
project: Buried treasure: rediscovering the Lord Chamberlain's collection of plays

The project began upon the long-overdue cataloguing of the Lord Chamberlain's collection from 1852 onwards. The pilot covered the decade to 1863. The collection for that period numbers about 3000 plays, including for example the British versions of Uncle Tom's Cabin and many farces and pantomimes with political implications around issues such as first-wave feminism. Cultured mid-Victorians agreed with G. H. Lewes that 'drama is extinct as literature' and ignored the new performance culture; these plays have therefore never been considered in either literary or social histories. [read more]

This project will update, analyse and re-present three important collections of children's playground songs and rhymes: the Opie Collection of Children's Games and Songs, and selections from collections at the National Centre for English Cultural Tradition (NATCECT) and the Leeds Archive of Vernacular Culture (LAVC). project: The Prehistoric Stones of Greece: a resource from field-survey

The Prehistoric Stones of Greece (SOG) set out to enhance the research value of survey projects conducted in Greece that had recovered Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic materials. SOG’s focus was to establish a database of stone tools and prehistoric lithics generally and by drawing this material into a common format enhance the resource for a variety of archaeological purposes; in particular academic research and heritage management. project: Hidden Histories of Exploration: Exhibiting Geographical Collections

This project considers the role played by indigenous peoples and intermediaries in the history of exploration, as revealed by research in the collections of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG). The project is particularly concerned with the roles of guides, porters, pilots, cooks, carriers, interpreters, go-betweens and informants in the creation of geographical knowledge. In wider terms, it seeks to provide a model for new ways of working with well-established geographical collections. [read more]

project: An old-spelling edition of the complete works of John Ford, together with an electronic concordance
Grant Holder: Professor Sir Brian Vickers
The project will produce an old-spelling edition of the seventeenth century author John Ford's complete poems, prose works and plays, including co-authored works, in monograph and online form. Texts will be freshly edited from the original Quarto editions, all extant copies of the Quartos will be collated, and editors will provide a text, textual collations and bibliographical notes, an introduction and full commentary. project: Dissenting academy libraries and their readers, 1720-1860
Grant Holder: Professor Isabel Rivers
The specific aim of this new project is to analyse and compare the libraries of the principal Congregational, Presbyterian, and Baptist academies, and in particular the use of the books by the students. The main repositories of catalogues, loan registers, surviving books, student essays, and lecture notes are Dr Williams's Library, London, Harris Manchester College, Oxford, and Bristol Baptist College. project: The British Contribution to RISM Series A/II: Phase III - catherdral and private collections

Répertoire International des Sources Musicales (RISM) was established in 1952 by the International Musicological Society and International Association of Music Libraries. The goal of RISM is to locate and catalogue all surviving musical sources dating from the earliest times to about 1800, and in doing so to bring them to the attention of a much wider public. This part of the project aimed to catalogue music manuscripts from the 17th and 18th centuries preserved in national, public, and academic libraries in the U.K., in county and city archives, and in cathedral and chapel libraries.
