London Theatre Bibliography (LTB)

This project combines two independent, but mutually supportive, projects which have complementary outputs: the need for a systematic and complete edition of all pre-1642 manuscript and printed records relating to the eight early Middlesex/Westminster theatres north of the Thames, and the complementary need for an aggregated bibliography which locates, assesses, and digests all printed transcriptions of pre-1642 documents relating to these theatres. It does so by focussing on a core element (records of early drama, secular music and ceremonial, and their subsequent transmission through transcriptions of these sources through the subsequent centuries) common to them both.
The records of drama in the early Middlesex/Westminster theatres will be assembled into a print publication published by U fo Toronto's Records of Early English Dramaa (REED) project, the bibliography will be published as a web application and will chart the publication of transcriptions of that data over the centuries. The combined research project thus offers both the generation of a primary resource and a basis for reflective analysis of how such data was selected and transmitted in subsequent traditions.
An online web application will provided facetted browser access to the MySQL database containing the LTB data.

Source material used:
The London Theatres Bibliography locates, assesses and digests all published transcriptions from three main original pre-1642 sources: manuscript, printed dramatic and printed non-dramatic. A typical entry includes (1) the necessary bibliographical information on the source (2) dating information (which can be surprisingly complex) (3) brief notes on the type of document; location and citation (both standard and as cited in the source); the conventions according to which it has been transcribed (4) notes on the theatrical auspices, geographical location, company and individual to which the record pertains (5) an abstract of the document, as well as any additional notes on the record.

In parallel with the digital LTB resource, Dr Jessica Freeman (postdoctoral researcher; cv attached), who is co-editor of REED's Middlesex/Westminster volume, will undertake the work for the edition of the original records of the eight theatres. This will be printed by the U of Toronto REED project, but may become material to be incorporated in REED's hopefully soon to be started online eREED project.
