Purpose:

SharePoint is a collaboration and content management server, composed of a suite of tools, that enable administrators and users to co-ordinate processes (which may be useful for project management), store digital objects, and collaborate with other parties. Sharepoint offers a set of APIs and modules that may be used and extended to provide new functionality or tailor existing functionality to bespoke requirements.
Sharepoint is commonly used to host collaborative workspaces, data management system, wikis and blogs.

A&H use case 1 description:

The “British Cartoon Archive Digitisation (BCAD)” project has used SharePoint to set up a project site containing project-related information such as tasks, issues, metadata schemas, presentations, evaluation studies etc. to be disseminated and shared amongst the team.
