Grant Holder:
Connected Histories (Sources for Building British History, 1500-1900) will create a federated search facility for a wide range of distributed electronic resources relating to early modern and nineteenth-century British History.
Through a combination of web crawling and the application of Natural Language Processing methodology the project will create a non-intrusive, distanced tagging of the data within those distributed sources to facilitate more sophisticated and structured searching.

project: Unlocking the Celtic Collector; The Mind, Methods and Materials of Alexander Carmichael (1832-1912).

The Carmichael Watson collection in Edinburgh University Library, centred on the papers of the pioneering folklorist Alexander Carmichael (1832-1912), is the foremost collection of its kind in the country, and is crucial to understanding the customs, storytelling traditions, poetry, songs and general lore of the Gaelic-speaking areas of Scotland. The project will see an intense dissemination and research programme alongside development of a digital resource that will enable users to search fully-indexed catalogue descriptions, full text transcriptions and biographical records. project: Wyndham Lewis's Art Criticism in the "Listener", 1946-1951: Postwar British Art in its Context of Ideas, Institutions, and Practice.
Grant Holder: Dr Alan Munton
This project is focused on the entire work of Wyndham Lewis, and pays particular attention to the ideological aspects of his thinking. At the same time it is concerned with those aspects of his work which either have not been explored by Spanish or foreign critics, or have been dealt with in equivocal or politically mediated ways. Since a great deal of Lewis's literary production remains dispersed in hard-to-find periodical publications, above all in the USA and Canada, we shall bring these materials together for study and publication. project: Online calendar of the correspondence of Charles Darwin

The web resource created through the AHRB-funded initiative `An online calendar of the correspondence of Charles Darwin' and launched in 2002, was based on a revised and updated edition of the printed Calendar to the Correspondence of Charles Darwin: 1821 – 1882 (Cambridge University Press, 1994), but incorporated further substantial additions and corrections. The book summarises every letter that the naturalist Charles Darwin (1809-82) was then known to have sent or received and is a standard reference work for scholars. [read more]
project: Sharing Ancient Wisdoms (SAWS)

The aim of the project is to use new technology to present and analyse the tradition of wisdom literatures in Greek and Arabic. Throughout antiquity and the middle ages collections of wise or useful sayings were created and circulated, as a practical response to the cost and inaccessibility of full texts in a manuscript age; the project will focus on those which collected moral and social advice. The compilation of these collections formed a crucial route by which ideas of reasonable behaviour and good conduct were disseminated over a huge area, and over many centuries. [read more]
project: Magnetic moments in the past: Developing archaeomagnetic dating for application in UK archaeology

This project follows on from a previous collaboration which established a methodology for using measurements of the past magnetic field of the Earth for dating archaeological materials in the last 4000 years in the UK. The primary aim of this project is to realise the potential of this research by developing its practical application in UK archaeology. There is increasing interest in using archaeomagnetic dating as part of the suite of chronological tools available to archaeologists. However, it has yet to be adopted routinely. [read more]
project: Staging Exile, Migration and Diaspora in Hispanic Theatre and Performance Cultures

The project focuses on Spanish Republican Exile (SRE) theatre and performance, aiming to recover, represent and help to preserve the full range of representation of the experience of exile in theatrical and performance texts and paratexts (histories, memoirs, reviews, criticism, photographs and audiovisual recordings), by contributing to the creation, updating and maintenance of the Centre for the Study of Hispanic Exile's bibliographical database and stand-alone web resource on SRE, and by bringing together key researchers on Spanish Exile Theatre and Performance in a series of panels within [read more]

Out of the Wings brings the untapped riches of the theatres of Spain and Spanish America to English-speaking theatre professionals – practitioners and researchers alike. project: A searchable, standards based catalogue of the Calum Maclean collection of Gaelic oral narrative

The Calum Maclean Collection Online Catalogue Project aims to make a major collection of material central to Scottish Ethnology available in digital form as an accessible and flexible research resource. The collection consists of over 13,000 manuscript pages of transcriptions of Gaelic folklore and song from the fieldwork of Calum Iain Maclean (1915-1960) carried out mainly in the Scottish Hebrides as well as in the Scottish Mainland Highlands. Primarily the collection consists of tale-texts together with full-length autobiographies from two major storytellers. [read more]
project: Architecture, Mathematics, and English Culture 1550-1750
Grant Holder: Dr Stephen Johnston
The project combined the histories of architecture and of science to investigate the relationship between architecture and practical mathematics, and the development and changing role of the architect. Sir Christopher Wren emerged as the central historical figure of the project, for his career as astronomer, natural philosopher and architect. [read more]
