Strandlines Digital Community is a King’s College London initiative that explores one of London’s most famous streets, the Strand, and its past and present communities. The project brings together local residents, workers and visitors by means of storytelling. Using digital technologies and techniques from life writing – a creative field concerned with personal life stories – it seeks to foster a more active sense of community in the Strand area. project: Poetry Beyond Text: Vision, Text and Cognition

This research project uses psychological, critical and creative methods to study how readers respond to the visual aspects of poetry. It involves specialists in English and Comparative Literature, Fine Art and Psychology. These include the shape of visual or concrete poetry (where words are arranged spatially in particular patterns on the page), the combination of poetry with images (in artists' books and prints), and the moving words and images found in digital poetry (a relatively new form of poetry which is usually web-based and often interactive). project: Online searchable item level catalogue and sample digital surrogate of the Archigram archives
Grant Holder: Dr Kester Rattenbury
The Archigram Archival Project (AAP) is a major new research resources that makes the work of the seminal 1960s-70s British architectural group, Archigram, available free online for public viewing and academic study.
The extraordinary influence of Archigram is internationally acknowledged through the award of the RIBA Gold Medal in 2002, exhibitions, books, and through their role in shaping many of the world's greatest contemporary architects and buildings. [read more]
project: Mapping the city in film: a geo-historical analysis
Grant Holder: Dr Julia Hallam
This project will provide the first full and extended research into the relationship between film and urban environments by developing an interactive digital map of Liverpool in film that will draw on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology. Utilising already established resources on Liverpool's urban landscape in film, which include a comprehensive database of films made in and of Liverpool from 1897 to the 1980s, the research will enable different urban spatial formations (filmic, architectural, geographic) to be brought into critical spatial dialogue. project: Landscape/Cityscape
Grant Holder: Mr Jorn Ebner
Investigation into the roles of Art in Public Spaces including the Internet by means of applying the metonym 'Landscape/Cityscape' to the production of art. The work was intended to engage with debates about art in public places and offer new possibilities of looking at landscape. Eventually there emerged three main developments within the project: one that followed the plan towards a portable landscape laid out in the original Fellowship proposal; one in relation to internet- and computer-based works of art; and one that followed a philosophical dimension relating to fluid conditions. project: Fitna, the video battle: how YouTube enables the young to perform their religious and public identities

In March 2008, Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders released a 16 minute anti-Islam movie called Fitna. Wilders had a hard time finding a broadcaster or internet provider willing to air the film, because his mere idea caused an immense global controversy, leading to death threats, violent protest, diplomatic incidents and fierce public debate. One of the reactions consisted of organised and unorganised video protest by young people from all over the world, who uploaded their reactions to websites such as YouTube or LiveLeak. [read more]

project: World Oral Literature Project
Grant Holder:
The World Oral Literature Project is an urgent global initiative to document and make accessible endangered oral literatures before they disappear without record.
Established at the University of Cambridge in 2009, the project aspires to become a permanent centre for the appreciation and preservation of oral literature and collaborate with local communities to document their own oral narratives. [read more]
project: Children's playground games and songs in the new media age

This project will update, analyse and re-present three important collections of children's playground songs and rhymes: the Opie Collection of Children's Games and Songs, and selections from collections at the National Centre for English Cultural Tradition (NATCECT) and the Leeds Archive of Vernacular Culture (LAVC). project: Performance as a medium of learning in museums and at heritage sites - an investigation

The PERFORMANCE, LEARNING AND HERITAGE research project is an investigation into the uses and impact of performance as a medium of learning in museums and at historic sites. The Centre for Applied Theatre Research (CATR) undertook research into the increasing and varied use being made of theatre and other drama-based activity as interpretive tools with visitors to museums and historic sites - an expanding but relatively under-researched field of performance practice.
